Cardiff City have dismissed reports linking them with Dutch midfielder Melle Meulensteen as the Championship club continues its search for new signings before the transfer window closes. Manager Brian Barry-Murphy called the speculation 'far-fetched' after the 27-year-old Go Ahead Eagles player was reportedly left out of his team's weekend draw with Feyenoord amid interest from Cardiff.
What positions are Cardiff targeting?
The Bluebirds are looking to strengthen in several areas, including a winger, striker, and a deep-lying physical midfielder. Barry-Murphy did not rule out adding a centre-back, given defensive injuries to Will Fish, Dylan Lawlor, and Callum Chambers. Cardiff finished second in League One last season with 91 points (27W-10D-9L), scoring 90 goals and conceding 50, but are now preparing for a Championship campaign.
Why the cautious approach?
Barry-Murphy stressed that the club will not rush into signings just to fill gaps. 'We need to improve the squad, not just add numbers,' he said. 'We have to be clear on who we bring in.' The manager also confirmed that Chelsea midfielder Omari Kellyman, previously linked with Cardiff, is no longer a target after the Premier League club opted for a permanent sale.
What comes next for Cardiff?
With two weeks left in the transfer window, Cardiff are still in the market for reinforcements. Their next fixture is at home against Blackburn Rovers on February 27, 2027. The club has so far signed Jack Moylan from Lincoln City and Nathan Trott permanently, while Calum Scanlon returned on loan from Liverpool.
