Cardiff City are closing in on a permanent deal for West Brom defender Krystian Bielik to bolster their injury-hit defence. Manager Brian Barry-Murphy confirmed the club expects to complete the signing by Thursday as the transfer window nears its close.

Why Bielik fits Cardiff’s current needs

The 28-year-old Poland international can play at centre-back or in midfield, offering versatility to a backline depleted by injuries. Will Fish, Dylan Lawlor, Callum Chambers and Gabriel Osho have all been unavailable, forcing Cardiff to rely on youngsters like Noah Anyadike, who made his senior debut in the Carabao Cup loss to Norwich City.

Bielik’s journey to West Brom and beyond

Bielik began his senior career with Legia Warsaw before joining Arsenal in 2015, though he never made a first-team appearance. Loan spells at Birmingham City, Walsall and Charlton Athletic preceded a permanent move to Derby County in 2019, where he made 48 appearances. After returning to Birmingham City on loan in 2022/23, his move was made permanent, and he played 68 times for the Blues before joining West Brom last summer.

Limited opportunities at The Hawthorns

Despite joining West Brom last summer following the expiry of his Birmingham contract, Bielik struggled to secure a regular starting place. He featured just 17 times in the Championship during the 2025/26 campaign and was on the bench for the season opener against Norwich City, coming on for the final minute.

Barry-Murphy’s transfer window stance

Speaking to Wales Online, Barry-Murphy said: “Hopefully, very.” when asked how busy Cardiff would be in the final days of the window. He added: “I was pretty sure we’d have somebody in today, so hopefully that’ll be the case by Thursday.” The manager explained delays were partly due to the club being selective over players, insisting there is financial headroom for further additions and that owner Vincent Tan is not involved in day-to-day discussions.

What this means for Cardiff’s immediate future

With the transfer window closing next Tuesday, securing Bielik would provide defensive stability ahead of Cardiff’s home fixture against Sheffield Utd on 2026-08-29. The Bluebirds currently sit 12th in the Championship with 2 points from two games, having scored and conceded three goals each, and are four points behind leaders Millwall.
