Free agent midfielder Jamie Allen has admitted he is surprised to still be without a club as the transfer window closes, with Cardiff among the sides linked with a move. The 31-year-old is available after his contract at Coventry City expired this summer and is now seeking a new challenge.

"I have been quite surprised myself, to be fair," Allen said. "I thought I would be in somewhere by now."

Allen made over 150 appearances for Coventry across five seasons, contributing 17 goals and 12 assists from midfield. His experience in the Championship and versatility to play centrally or in advanced roles has reportedly attracted attention from several clubs, including Cardiff. The Bluebirds sit 20th in the table with four points from six games, having scored seven goals but conceded ten.

Cardiff's need for midfield reinforcement is clear. They have drawn their last two matches, including a 1-1 result with Stoke City last weekend where Jamilu Colwill scored the equaliser. The club's injuries list includes key midfield options like Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies, thinning the squad's creative resources. Top scorer Cian Ashford has two goals this season, but the team has struggled for consistent results, with a recent form of two draws and three losses in their last five outings.

Allen's availability presents a low-risk opportunity to add Championship know-how. He would offer a different profile to Cardiff's existing midfielders, known for his energy and ability to arrive late in the box. His comments suggest a move could be concluded quickly if terms are agreed.

Cardiff's next fixture is at home to fifth-placed Charlton on 19 September, a match where additional midfield options could prove valuable. The club has not commented on any potential interest in Allen, but the player's openness provides a clear path for negotiations should they choose to act.
