Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik is the subject of a police investigation following an on-pitch altercation with a teenage fan during Saturday's Championship match at Portsmouth. The incident, which occurred in the 70th minute of Cardiff's 2-0 defeat at Fratton Park, has been reported as an alleged common assault by Hampshire Police.

The 28-year-old Polish defender went to retrieve the ball for a throw-in when a Portsmouth supporter took it from him and threw it away. Bielik then appeared to grab the young fan by the throat, with the supporter responding by slapping the player in the face. Stewards quickly intervened, leading the fan and his family out of the stadium as referee James Bell briefly halted play to calm the situation.

Hampshire Police confirmed they have launched an investigation into the events of September 5. "We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during yesterday’s (Saturday 5 September) football match at Fratton Park," a police spokesperson said. "Our enquiries are ongoing." The incident was included in the match official's report and will also be subject to a separate Football Association investigation. Bielik avoided any punishment from the referee during the match itself.

Portsmouth Football Club described the matter as a safeguarding issue in their official statement. Manager John Mousinho apologized to Cardiff and their players after the match, stating the incident was unacceptable. "We want to create a difficult atmosphere at Fratton Park but not to that extent," Mousinho said. Cardiff City issued their own statement expressing satisfaction with how match officials handled the situation, emphasizing that player protection remains most important. Manager Brian Barry-Murphy spoke with Bielik immediately after the incident. "I wanted to make sure he was protected and make sure he was okay, which he is," Barry-Murphy said. "I thought the referee and his staff handled the incident impeccably."

The controversy adds to a difficult start to the season for Cardiff, who sit 22nd in the Championship with just three points from five games. Their record shows zero wins, three draws and two losses, with a recent form of LLDDD. They have scored six goals while conceding nine, leaving them with a minus three goal difference and eight points behind league leaders Swansea City.

Bielik was making just his fourth appearance for Cardiff since joining the club last month. The former Arsenal academy graduate has become an immediate part of Barry-Murphy's plans during this challenging period. The manager and Portsmouth's Mousinho, along with both team captains, were spoken to by the referee following the altercation.
