Cardiff Football Club's Butetown Kicks initiative provides free football sessions for local children in the Butetown and Grangetown neighborhoods. The project, led by Hashim Mustafa, aims to create safe spaces for youngsters to build community and friendship. Mustafa, a father himself, was inspired to start the project after his own experiences growing up in Butetown, where he couldn't always afford to play football. He now dedicates his spare time to running the weekly sessions, funded by the Premier League Kicks project. The initiative has been running in Butetown since 2023 and has seen over 20 to 30 local children attend each week. For the children, the sessions offer more than just football, providing a safe and supervised environment to socialize and have fun. As one of the regular attendees, Malik Abdulmajeed, says, 'We have so much fun here because we've got nothing to do at home if we're bored.' The project has also helped to create a sense of community among the children, with Mustafa saying, 'I see myself in some of them, and I'm happy that I could help a child not be in the situation where they have to pay for football.'
