Defensive Woes
Cardiff City are grappling with an early-season injury crisis at the back. Dylan Lawlor, Calum Chambers, Will Fish and Gabriel Osho are all out of action, leaving the club with only a handful of fit central defenders. The absence of these four senior players has forced head coach Brian Barry-Murphy to experiment with his back line.
During the first-round EFL Cup win over Swindon Town, Barry-Murphy fielded a side that was close to his preferred first-choice line-up, with Yousef Salech scoring twice in a 3-2 victory. However, the loss of the four centre-backs has left the club with limited options for the upcoming match against Norwich City.
Squad Rotation
In the 3-2 draw with Wrexham last Monday, Barry-Murphy brought back Calum Scanlon from a loan spell at Liverpool. Scanlon played 80 minutes in that match and then completed a full 90 minutes against Derby County, where he was deployed in central defence alongside right-back Perry Ng and left-back Joel Bagan.
The back four used at Derby saw Ng and Bagan move into the centre, while Ronan Kpakio and Scanlon started as full-backs. The only defensive option on the bench at Pride Park was 15-year-old Noah Anyadike, who could be considered for a debut against Norwich.
Barry-Murphy has also highlighted the need to protect his frontline options before the Championship clash with Sheffield United next weekend. He may tap into the under-21 squad for additional back-up, keeping the fit defenders rested.
Jack Moylan suffered a dead leg at Derby, but the club remains optimistic that he will not miss the Norwich game. Other potential starters include Joel Colwill, David Turnbull, Isaak Davies and Callum Robinson, all of whom began the match on the bench.
Looking Ahead
Barry-Murphy stressed that every game is approached with the intention of winning, but he cautioned against pushing the squad too hard early in the season. "We treat every game with the intention of winning and that won't change," he said. "With regard to Tuesday, we have to be mindful of not pushing too far, too soon in the season."
Cardiff reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup last season, their best run since the 2012 final loss to Liverpool. The club now faces a tough test against Norwich City, hoping to keep the defensive line intact and secure another cup run.
Key Players to Watch
- Perry Ng - Right-back moved into central defence.
- Joel Bagan - Left-back moved into central defence.
- Calum Scanlon - Full-back, recently returned from loan.
- Noah Anyadike - 15-year-old defender on the bench.

The outcome of the match will hinge on how well Barry-Murphy can balance the need for defensive solidity with the imperative to keep his key players fit for the rest of the season.
