Cardiff City have lost one of their brightest academy prospects after Arsenal completed the signing of Axel Donczew, the club’s youngest-ever player.

Donczew, 16, became Cardiff’s youngest first-team player when he came on as a second-half substitute against Newport County in the EFL Trophy on October 25, aged 15 years and 234 days. He made two senior appearances for the Bluebirds last season, including a second outing against AFC Wimbledon in December.

The teenager has also represented Wales at every youth level from under-15 to under-19. He is also eligible to represent Poland through his heritage. His move to Arsenal follows a busy transfer window for the north London club, who have also signed Elijah Upson from Tottenham Hotspur’s academy.

What happened?

Arsenal announced the capture of Donczew on Wednesday, adding another young talent to their ranks. The 16-year-old becomes the latest in a line of teenage signings for Arsenal, who have focused heavily on academy prospects this summer.

Donczew’s departure leaves Cardiff with a gap in their youth setup. The Bluebirds finished second in League One last season with 91 points from 46 games, 12 points behind champions Lincoln. Their recent form read LWWWD as the new campaign approached.

Why it matters for Cardiff

Losing a player of Donczew’s profile is a blow for Cardiff’s long-term planning. The teenager’s two first-team outings showed promise, and his departure means the club must now rebuild in midfield.

Cardiff’s attack last season scored 90 goals but conceded 50, leaving them with a +40 goal difference. Their next fixture is scheduled for February 27, 2027 against Blackburn at home.

What comes next?

Arsenal will integrate Donczew into their academy setup as he continues his development. The teenager’s move adds to a growing list of young signings for Mikel Arteta’s side, who have also captured Christos Tzolis for €40m.

Cardiff, meanwhile, will look to strengthen their squad before the new season kicks off. The Bluebirds’ second-place finish last season keeps them in League One, where they’ll aim to close the 12-point gap to Lincoln.

League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 2nd in League One, 91 pts, 27W-10D-9L from 46 games, recent form LWWWD.
