Cardiff City forward Jack Moylan has been praised by club teammate Yousef Salech for a poignant goal celebration during an international match. Moylan scored and assisted in the Republic of Ireland's 3-0 Nations League victory over Israel in Debrecen on Sunday.
The 25-year-old, making his first competitive start, netted Ireland's third goal in the 25th minute. After scoring, he removed the black armband worn in memory of those lost in the Israel-Palestine conflict, kissed it, and raised it to the sky before kissing the crest on his shirt. The gesture was met with loud boos from Israeli supporters in the stadium.
Salech's support
Cardiff teammate Yousef Salech, whose father is Palestinian, highlighted the tribute on social media. "I'm the only one in my family who really concentrates on my football right now," Salech said. The 24-year-old Danish-born forward, who scored 14 goals in Cardiff's promotion campaign last season, has previously spoken about the situation in Gaza. Salech's own form this season is detailed in the club's stats section, where his contributions are tracked.
A difficult backdrop
The match itself was played against a backdrop of controversy. Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad after expressing discomfort about playing. The squad held lengthy discussions, including a two-hour meeting the day before the match and another four hours of talks after Bazunu's withdrawal, before reaching a consensus to travel to Hungary for the fixture. Ireland players did not shake hands with their opponents before kick-off and bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem.
Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said it had been tough on the players, expressing sympathy for those wanting to focus on football. Ireland's goals came in a 12-minute spell, with Troy Parrott and Adam Idah scoring before Moylan's finish.
For Cardiff, Moylan is the club's top scorer this season with three goals in eight Championship appearances, a key figure as the team seeks to improve its position in the standings. The club currently sits 21st in the table with seven points from eight games, a record that includes just one win in their last five league outings. Both Moylan and Salech are expected to feature in Cardiff's next match, an away fixture against 16th-placed Blackburn Rovers on 10 October, a key game as they look to climb the table.
